White, Will Sanderson, Ray Liotta, Burt Reynolds. Directed by Uwe Boll. Uwe Boll must be one of the most criticised and ridiculed directors in film history (after Ed Wood). A prolific film-maker, with several films every year, he has received mostly negative reviews as well as Razzie nominations and wins for the worst film or worst performances (actually he won for this particular film). This film was highly criticised also by fans of video games as well as Mediaeval stories. However, it can be seen as an undemanding costume drama, with special effects and good British Columbia scenery, dialogue which is sometimes good and sometimes corny. It also has a mixture of performances. Jason Statham is his usual strong, semi-articulate self, an action hero who always pleases his fans. However, Ray Liotta appears as a magician, Burt Reynolds is the king, Lee Lee Sobieski as the daughter of the court Magus. There are stronger performances by John Rhys- Davies as the Magus, Ron Perlman as the wise elder, Claire Forlani as Jason Statham’s wife. There is a terrible performance by Matthew Lillard as the evil nephew of the king. The film focuses on a kingdom, under siege from a magician who controls strange-looking creatures, animals called the krugs. When they attack a peaceful town, killing the son of Farmer (Statham) and capturing his wife, Farmer becomes involved in the military attack against the krugs. There are evil goings-on with the daughter of the Magus emotionally involved with the magician and then turning on him, the nephew going in league with the magician as well. The film is very American in its style, despite the international cast. There is a mixture of spectacle, battles, emotional situations, magic, fights. The film is a curiosity item because of its strong cast, because of the films of Ewe Boll – and, it can be said, that it is not as bad, perhaps, as some of his other films, but is for generous-minded and relaxed audiences only.
